Pokémon TCG Card Info

We have been playing the Pokémon TCG for several years. We each have several decks and participate in the Pokémon League at our local Pokémon store, where I am a certified coach. We are going to show you many helpful hints and ideas about how to play this game. Some techniques about how to play wisely are included, along with good deck building skills. Of course, you can view the cards on other pages too. We don't have enough time to teach you everything, but we will tell you the basics...

How Do I Buy The Cards?
Now that you play the game, there is one thing left to do: collect all of the Pokémon cards. You know what they are (if not go to the pages with the cards on them from the main page of the Pokémon Database).

There are many ways to buy cards:

  1. Separately in card stores. Usually commons are $.25, uncommons $1 and rares from $2 to $50. In general, 1st edition cards are more expensive and rare than unlimited edition cards.
  2. In booster packs. Booster packs range $3 to $8, depending on the store. They contain random cards from either the basic or jungle card edition, depending on which booster pack you buy. They have 1 rare, sometimes a holographic rare. The basic edition booster packs have 2 energy cards, while the jungle booster packs contain none. You also get Evolution Pokémon, Basic Pokémon, and Trainer Cards. There are 11 cards in a booster pack. They are not all the same type of Pokémon either. Booster backs are good for collecting or fixing up a battle deck.
  3. In one of the Preconstructed Decks. A Preconstructed Deck means they all have the exact same cards in each deck, so you know exactly what you are buying. There is a two player starter deck, four theme decks for the Basic Edition, and two theme decks for the Jungle Edition. There will be two theme decks for the Fossil Edition, shipping on September 28, 1999. Note: the Machamp card is only available in the Starter Deck.

Trading And Buying Cards
In the process of collecting all of the Pokémon cards, you will have buy and/or trade for cards with other players like yourself. You have to be smart when dealing with some cards. We all know that sometimes we have too many of one card or no energy for it ,but that doesn't mean you have to give it away for free. As for buying, you might use the guidelines above for commons, uncommons, and rares. Of course, don't complain if the persons sells them cheaper!

Here are some tips and things you should know when trading or buying:

  • You only trade a 1st edition another 1st edition card of the same edition. But if the other person is offering a 1st addition for your non 1st edition, go for it!
  • You should stick with trading common for common, uncommon for uncommon, unholo rare for unholo rare, and holo rare for holo rare.
  • You can trade jungles and fossils as if they were in the basic card edition as long as you follow the above.
  • When buying cards from people all commons should be $.25, all energy cards should be $.25, all uncomons should be $1, and rares vary in price.
  • Never give out a card for free.
  • Never trade a card you need. You need a strong battle deck to win, you even need those small cards. If you care more about collecting than playing you can disregard this tip.
  • Sometimes it is ok to trade two or three uncommons for a rare or two commons for an uncommon etc.. depending on the card.
  • Energy cards are different. You can trade a common for an energu if you really need it, but you should always try for more than one. It takes more than one to win.
  • Make many trades and add them to your battle decks.
  • Check for prices before trading. Sometimes its not good to trade a $10 for a $30 card.
  • If you are a collector, try for new, better cards and get rid of doubles. Always keep extra rares handy for trading with cards you really want.
  • Never get suckered by someone. It isn't fun!
